Hitler's Wolfsschanze, or Wolf's Lair, was situated in the Masurian woods near the town of Rastenburg. This heavily fortified complex was selected in the autumn of 1940 as a central base of operations from which to plan and instigate Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. Its remote and seemingly impenetrable nature likely contributed to its strategic importance for Hitler during the Eastern campaign.
