Jarlmadangah: Our Dream

Jarlmadangah is situated in the West Kimberleys region of Western Australia. Specifically, it lies south of the town of Derby. This geographical context is important, as it grounds the community's story within a specific and significant Australian landscape, highlighting the connection between the land and the cultural practices depicted.

The main objective behind the establishment of Jarlmadangah was to create a focal point for strong family bonds, traditional language, law, and culture. Elders John and Harry Watson envisioned a place where these vital cultural elements could be preserved and actively passed on to the younger generations within the Nyikina and Mangala nations. This intergenerational transmission of heritage is the core aspiration of the community.

The community of Jarlmadangah was first formed in 1987. This foundational year marked the beginning of John and Harry Watson's ambitious project to create a dedicated space for their people. Their aim was to establish a strong centre for family, language, law, and culture, ensuring these aspects of their heritage would be actively nurtured and passed down.

At the heart of 'Jarlmadangah: Our Dream' are two prominent Elders, John and Harry Watson.
