While its exact nature remains veiled for much of the film, it clearly involves a deep, perhaps unsettling, connection between Rei Ayanami and Shinji Ikari. This project hints at larger, more complex machinations beyond the immediate defence against the Angels, suggesting a hidden agenda that will have profound implications for the characters and the world of Evangelion.

The film deeply probes the immense pressure placed upon young individuals tasked with humanity's defence. Pilots like Shinji, Rei, and the new arrivals grapple with the psychological toll of constant combat and the weight of expectation. The narrative doesn't shy away from the personal sacrifices demanded, exploring how duty conflicts with individual desires and the often-blurry line between heroism and profound personal cost. This thematic exploration is interwoven with the ongoing Angel attacks.

This instalment sees the arrival of two significant new EVA pilots. We're introduced to Makinami Mari Illustrous, a character shrouded in mystery, whose piloting style and motivations are initially unclear.
